Rome as a concept: the most important in the history of Western art.
Everything converges in Rome or is opposed to it. But which Rome? That of the Emperors? That of the Popes? That of his countryside? The one that radiates from the fulcrum of its myth to the edges of a continent?
To what extent does the artistic idea of Rome have any relevance to reality? When does it turn into something different?
The exhibition aims to investigate some of these aspects from a historical and critical point of view, through a series of real πππ π π π‘π’ππππ , a limited selection of works chosen for their particular aesthetic and content in relationship with Rome.
The line of investigation will be the typical one of our gallery, through Flemish paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, which – for the first time in Italy – will be put into direct dialogue with Roman archaeological finds. A series of site-specific installations that we created for this occasion, in our spaces at Antonello Colonna Resort where the exhibition will take place as usual.
The occasion will be the best to show a series of unpublished works, brought back into dialogue after centuries, to discover a crucial chapter in the history of art, constituting the first case in Italy of a project capable of physically bringing together classical and Flemish art centuries after their first, original, dialogue.
